In a bold move that marks the 45th anniversary of one of gaming's most beloved icons, Bandai Namco is set to unveil a gritty redesign of Pac-Man in its upcoming title, "Shadow Labyrinth." As the yellow, fruit-chomping circle prepares to step into a darker, more mature realm, fans of the franchise can expect a thrilling departure from the family-friendly roots that have defined Pac-Man since its arcade debut in 1980. "Shadow Labyrinth" is positioned as a 2D action-platformer that takes inspiration from the “PAC-MAN: Circle” episode in Amazon’s Secret Level anthology. The narrative revolves around a swordsman awakened by a floating yellow orb, known as P.U.C.K., which hints at the character's origins—Pac-Man is called "Puck-Man" in Japan. This new storyline is just one part of the game’s effort to connect with both long-time fans and newcomers who may not have engaged with the traditional Pac-Man experience. Producer Aizawa explains that the decision to shift genres to a maze-focused platformer came from a desire to explore new gameplay elements. He emphasizes that the maze remains a core concept, saying, "When we thought about the maze, the 2D action platformer was the best genre match." This aligns with the Metroidvania style, characterized by non-linear exploration, though developers are keen to clarify that "Shadow Labyrinth" is not labeled as a Metroidvania but rather a playful twist they call "Pac-and-slash." Interestingly, the game will not feature the Pac-Man name in its title, a conscious choice made to attract a broader audience unfamiliar with the franchise. "We wanted to brand this game in a different way," Aizawa states, noting that while the absence of the iconic name might seem risky, it opens the door to new players who may identify it as "that crazy, dark Pac-Man game." Set against a backdrop inspired by the Ice Age, "Shadow Labyrinth" introduces grotesque monsters and challenges that diverge from the classic Pac-Man experience of dodging ghosts. While the role of these familiar specters remains uncertain, hints from the developers suggest that there will be more to uncover as players delve into the dark labyrinth. The design of enemies and bosses is intricately tied to the Ice Age theme, though Piasek suggests that external influences may have contributed to their evolution, adding layers of depth to the gameplay experience. The gameplay itself promises to retain the iconic eating motif, as players will navigate the maze and consume bosses using a black, color-inverted Pac-Man—an homage to the original character’s core mechanic. This juxtaposition of the familiar and the new is intended to create an engaging experience for veterans and newcomers alike. Scheduled for release in 2025 on multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S, "Shadow Labyrinth" will be offered as a complete package without post-launch downloadable content. According to Aizawa, the goal is for players to have a cohesive experience from the outset. Ultimately, Bandai Namco is betting on "Shadow Labyrinth" to make a significant impact as it reinvents Pac-Man for a modern audience. With a design philosophy that embraces the unexpected, the game is poised to challenge conventions while paying tribute to its storied past. As fans eagerly await the release, one thing is clear: Pac-Man is ready to take a bold leap into the shadows.
