The construction of the gigafactory for battery cell production for electric vehicles in Sagunt, Valencia, is progressing well, thanks to the recent installation of over 300 prefabricated concrete structures. This ambitious project, carried out by PowerCo, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, promises not only to transform the industrial landscape of the region but also to boost the local economy by creating thousands of jobs. The structures, being erected with high-quality materials, are in the installation phase and form the necessary backbone for the buildings that will house the production lines. With a volume of 12 million tons of steel, the scale of the project is evident, as these prefabricated pillars are designed to support significant loads, equivalent to the weight of more than 60 cars each. Over the next six months, the focus of the work will be on raising beams and pillars for the first block of the gigafactory, as well as for the energy and cooling systems center. The buildings will reach heights between 24 and 36 meters, demonstrating the robustness and modernity of the design that will be implemented in this industrial scheme. Javier Rivera, CEO of PowerCo, has emphasized the importance of this investment in the Valencian Community, highlighting collaboration with local suppliers for the production of prefabricated elements. This approach not only ensures progress in construction but also strengthens the region's economy by promoting employment and business cooperation. In total, there are already more than 180 workers dedicated to the construction of the initial structures. However, this number is expected to increase dramatically, surpassing 1,000 employees by mid-2025, as work progresses on the next manufacturing blocks and other logistical infrastructures. The sequential planning of the project is key to its success. While deep foundations are being laid for the main buildings, teams are efficiently advancing with the placement of concrete pillars. This organization of work not only optimizes construction times but also maintains high-quality standards at each phase of the process. In addition to its direct impact on employment, the gigafactory represents a significant step towards sustainability. As a production center for battery cells, it aligns with the growing demand for electric vehicles and, consequently, with the environmental commitments undertaken by both the EU and Spain. PowerCo is not alone in this venture; the project has the financial backing of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce through the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. This government investment underscores the relevance of the project in the context of the transition to a greener economy. PowerCo's vision goes beyond the physical construction of the gigafactory. It is a long-term commitment to innovation, sustainable development, and the creation of an industrial ecosystem that fosters economic growth in the region. In this sense, the construction of the Sagunt gigafactory stands not only as an industrial milestone but also as a driver of social and economic transformation for the Valencian Community. As the works progress and the horizon of the gigafactory takes shape, a promising future is projected for both PowerCo and the region, where the focus on electric mobility becomes the strategic axis of a new industrial paradigm.
