In a world where environmental awareness and fuel efficiency are increasingly relevant, the GAC Emkoo HEV emerges as an interesting option in the Peruvian automotive market. This mid-size SUV, which arrived in the country in 2023, has become the first self-recharging hybrid vehicle from GAC Motor and has undergone extensive performance testing on the chaotic streets of Lima. Aiming to discover its real-world performance, Ruedas y Tuercas conducted an evaluation that combined urban traffic and highway driving. During the test, the Emkoo HEV was driven in conditions of heavy traffic, a common scenario for Lima's motorists. With a total weight of up to 140 kg on board, measurements were taken in the different driving modes that this vehicle offers: hybrid, electric, and gasoline. However, the hybrid mode was the most utilized, reflecting the model's primary functionality. It is worth mentioning that the maximum energy recovery mode was used throughout the test, which undoubtedly influenced the final results. With the air conditioning set to a minimum and variations between eco, comfort, and sport driving modes, the vehicle demonstrated its ability to adapt to different situations without compromising efficiency. The model in question, the GAC Emkoo HEV 2.0 DHT HEV GL, is offered at a starting price of $33,990. This SUV is equipped with a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine, complemented by an electric generator. In terms of performance, it combines 179 hp and 300 Nm of torque, figures considered competitive in the compact SUV segment. The Atkinson engine technology is a great ally in the quest for efficiency, as it allows the engine to operate with less effort, thereby reducing fuel consumption. Additionally, the integration of an electric generator with a ternary lithium battery provides an extra boost to the vehicle's performance. The Emkoo HEV also stands out for its quiet operation mode, initially starting as an electric vehicle. This means that in the early stages of driving, especially at low speeds, the vehicle generates no noise, which can be an advantage in urban environments. The transition between hybrid and gasoline modes occurs automatically, adapting to driving conditions in real-time. One of the most relevant innovations of the Emkoo HEV is its regenerative braking system, which allows for the recovery of kinetic energy during deceleration and stores it in the batteries. This system is configurable, enabling drivers to adjust the intensity of deceleration according to their driving style, a detail that can be crucial for maximizing fuel efficiency. During the testing period, a total of 631 kilometers was traveled with the vehicle, starting with an odometer reading of 1,328 km and finishing at 1,959 km. Considering the remaining 130 km in the tank at the time of return, it was estimated that the total range of the Emkoo HEV could reach up to 720 km, which is notable compared to other vehicles in its segment, which typically offer between 450 and 500 km of range. In terms of consumption, the average recorded was 5.8 liters per 100 km, equivalent to approximately 65 km per gallon. However, when calculating the real range based on fuel consumed, a more adjusted result of 50 km per gallon was obtained under mixed-use conditions. This performance is not only attractive from an operational economic perspective but also reflects a significant advancement in hybrid technology, positioning the GAC Emkoo HEV as a viable option for those seeking a vehicle that combines comfort, technology, and environmental responsibility in the bustling traffic of Lima.
