Thousands gathered in Accrington this past weekend for the much-anticipated Soapbox Challenge, a vibrant spectacle that brought joy, camaraderie, and a dash of competition to the town. BBC Radio Lancashire's own Graham Liver kicked off the festivities with a flamboyant racing cart inspired by the iconic Delorean from the beloved film "Back to the Future." Dressed as the quirky character Doc Brown, Liver was joined on the track by his co-presenter, Parin Begum, who sported a NORI brick-themed cart, setting the tone for a fun-filled day. Liver, who has participated in the event for three consecutive years, expressed his excitement, stating, "What a day and what an event. It's different every time. It's such a fun day out!" His enthusiasm was echoed throughout the crowd, as families and friends came together to support the participants and enjoy a day of entertainment. The Soapbox Challenge, sponsored by Hyndburn Borough Council, Accrington and Rossendale College, and Financial Affairs, offered more than just racing. Attendees were treated to an array of live music and dance performances, which added a festive atmosphere to the occasion. Highlighting the community spirit, the event was also a platform to raise awareness for important causes. The overall champion of this year’s race was the Senator Group with their innovative cart, Jeffrey's Jet, which drew attention not only for its speed but also for its mission. The cart was designed to raise awareness for Jeffrey's Journey, a campaign supporting a colleague’s family member affected by Batten Disease. The dedication shown by the participants was truly commendable, with the North Lancs Training Group taking second place with their Minions-themed entry. First-time racers, Mission Impossible, secured the third spot, showcasing the diversity of creativity and passion among the participants. In a remarkable display of resilience and community participation, 104-year-old Andrew Anderton of the Accrington's Royal British Legion took to the track, proving that age is no barrier to fun and competition. The event also acknowledged the importance of creativity, with Stolle Machinery winning the best-dressed trophy for their beverage can-themed cart and matching costumes. Highlighting a message of global solidarity, the organizers chose to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine's independence. This tribute included a Ukrainian-themed cart, traditional Ukrainian food, and a performance by a local dance troupe, further enhancing the sense of community and shared celebration. All entry fees collected during the challenge were earmarked for the local charity Maundy Relief. Organizers expressed hope that this year’s contributions would push the total raised for the charity since the event's inception in 2018 to over £10,000, underscoring the event’s commitment to giving back to the community. Councillor Kimberley Whitehead from Hyndburn Borough Council remarked on the event's significance, saying, "Not only do we get to see fast and ferocious racing, but the event also brings all areas of the community together to enjoy themselves and to shop local around town." With its blend of excitement, entertainment, and community spirit, the Accrington Soapbox Challenge has once again proven to be a highlight of the local calendar, promising even more thrills for next year.
