Work has halted at a building site in Halesworth, sparking speculation and concern within the community. The site, which is set to host 43 one and two-bedroom apartments as well as 10 bungalows, has been silent for around two months. Local historian and chair of the Halesworth and District Museum trustees, David Wollweber, expressed uncertainty regarding the reason for the pause, noting that while there are rumors of archaeological issues, he believes the claims are unfounded. According to Wollweber, an archaeological team had previously reported minimal findings during their excavation in June. They unearthed a building and five graves believed to date back to late Saxon times, potentially linked to the nearby church. Despite the historical significance of these discoveries, Wollweber emphasized that no substantial evidence had emerged to justify the work stoppage. Stuart Boulter from Cotswold Archaeology clarified that their involvement with the site ended in June, asserting that their findings did not include any Roman remains. He stated, "The stopping of building work at the site has got nothing to do with us." Boulter further confirmed that the team was scheduled to return for additional excavations in two areas, dispelling fears that archaeological concerns might have led to the delay. The project, spearheaded by McCarthy Stone, a developer renowned for its retirement communities across the UK, received planning approval in July 2023 after a public consultation revealed overwhelming support from local residents. With 73% of respondents endorsing the plans, the company had expressed confidence in meeting the local demand for retirement accommodation, which they assert would also help free up family homes in Halesworth. In light of the ongoing work stoppage, a spokesperson for McCarthy Stone acknowledged the community’s concerns but refrained from providing specific details. "At present, we're unable to disclose any additional information regarding the site," the spokesperson stated, assuring residents that updates would be forthcoming. As the town awaits further clarity on the future of the development, the mystery surrounding the site continues to stir local interest and speculation. The community hopes for a swift resolution, allowing construction to resume and progress toward enhancing Halesworth’s housing options for its aging population.
