The eyes of the world are once again on Peru, which is preparing to host one of the most exciting events on the sports calendar: the Junior World Championship of Artistic Swimming. From August 28 to September 1, the Legacy Aquatic Center in Videna will become the stage where more than 30 countries will compete for glory, with around 350 swimmers promising to dazzle spectators with their artistry, precision, and synchronization. The event was officially presented last Monday, in the presence of both national and international authorities, highlighting the importance of this championship for the development of the sport in the country. The participation of renowned teams, such as Japan and Spain, who took the top two spots in the previous edition in Quebec, adds a level of competitiveness that generates great anticipation among fans. The coach of the Peruvian team, Maura Xavier, emphasized the significance of the championship not only for the athletes but also for the country's prestige in the international arena. "The development of these events is important because the country earns the respect of rivals and judges. This tournament will elevate competitiveness and generate greater international visibility," she commented. The experience gained in previous competitions, such as the World Series in France, has been crucial in preparing young Peruvian athletes for this challenge. Xavier, who has been in charge of the team since 2019, sees this generation of swimmers as the foundation of the team that will represent Peru at the Lima 2027 Pan American Games. "The work is long-term, and now they will have an unforgettable experience," highlighted the coach, emphasizing the goal of building a strong team that can shine in future competitions. The Peruvian team is made up of ten talented swimmers who have been selected after months of hard work and dedication. Each of them will represent their clubs and, at the same time, the entire country in this event that promises to be not only a sporting spectacle but also a cultural one. Tickets are already available, starting at S/20, allowing a broad audience to enjoy this unique event. Taking advantage of the momentum generated by the Junior World Championship, the country is also hosting the Pan American Championship by Categories, which begins today and will run until August 22. This tournament will bring together teams and clubs from various countries in the Americas, creating a highly competitive environment that will benefit all participants, including Peruvians. Among Peru's medal hopes are María José Ccoyllo and Adriana Toulier, who excelled at the Panam Artistic Swimming Championships in Florida. "The expectations are quite high for us because last year we were champions in this same event," said Ccoyllo, who hopes to defend her title at home. The motivation to compete in front of their audience is palpable among the swimmers. "It's super motivating to have a lot of people cheering us on at the aquatic center," Toulier expressed, highlighting the importance of public support in a sport that has historically been small in Peru. The magnitude of these championships in the country, she argues, will significantly contribute to the visibility and growth of artistic swimming. Both swimmers agree that hosting events of such magnitude in Peru will have a positive impact not only on the athletes but also on the promotion of artistic swimming as a discipline. "Having such important championships at home helps spread our sport," concluded María José, revealing the desire for more people to get involved and take an interest in this fascinating discipline. As the Junior World Championship of Artistic Swimming approaches, excitement and hope are growing in the country, which is preparing not only to be a spectator but a protagonist on the world sports stage. With a dedicated team and a passionate fanbase, Peru is ready to showcase its talent and determination, leaving an indelible mark on the history of this sport.
