The Peruvian U17 volleyball team has achieved a remarkable performance in the World Championship of the category, which is taking place in Lima. This success is partly thanks to the leadership of their captain, Ariana Vásquez, a 15-year-old who has demonstrated exceptional maturity for her age. In an exciting match against Argentina, the national team secured a 3-2 victory, thus ensuring their place among the eight best teams in the world. This triumph highlights not only the individual talent of the players but also the teamwork and determination they have shown throughout the tournament. Ariana, originally from Iquitos, shared in a recent interview how her experience with the team has been and the challenges she has faced in leaving her home to dedicate herself to volleyball. The young captain emphasized the importance of enjoying the process and learning from each match, regardless of the outcome. "This is a sporting event, a celebration. We have to enjoy it, which is something that Professor Rizola tells us: we have to enjoy the moment because we won’t always have this opportunity," she stated. The growth of the team has been remarkable since its formation in last year's South American Championship. Ariana mentions that, despite the new additions and changes within the group, camaraderie and communication have been fundamental to the team's development. "I try to maintain good communication with all the girls, so that everything runs smoothly. If something is not right off the court, it will be reflected on the field," she added, showing her commitment not only to her role in the game but also to the well-being of the group. The training sessions and friendly matches against powerhouses like Italy and Japan have provided the players with valuable experience. "It has been interesting because it’s the first time we’ve faced them, and this way we learn new things and adapt to different situations," Vásquez commented, emphasizing the importance of facing challenges and stepping out of the comfort zone in the learning process. Regarding the technical and psychological development of the team, Ariana emphasizes that they have worked on various areas, including technique, tactics, and especially the psychological aspect, which is crucial for a group of young athletes. "We have improved technically, physically, and tactically, but especially psychologically, which is something that greatly influences our age," she explained, highlighting the impact that mental work has on sports performance. With a focus on the present and each upcoming match, the captain shares that the goal is to continue progressing step by step. "We are focused on winning one point, then winning another, and trying to reach 25 to take the set," she noted. This strategy reflects a positive mindset and a methodical preparation that could be key to the team's success in the tournament. Ariana is also facing the transition of living in Lima, away from her home in Iquitos. Although adapting was difficult at first, she has since found her place in the capital. "It’s tough. At first, it feels like a sleepover with your cousins, but then you realize that your brother, your dad, your mom, and your friends are not there," she reflected on the process of leaving her family and social life behind. Despite the distance, she feels supported by her family in Lima, who encourage her on her athletic journey. Regarding her future, Ariana prefers not to rush. "I prefer to take it step by step and see what the future holds. Obviously, I would like to continue in volleyball, but we will see what comes next," she expressed, showing surprising maturity in her approach to her career. This attitude resonates well with the values that her coach and the team have fostered: responsibility, fun, and determination. The story of Ariana Vásquez and her team is a reminder of the power of sports to unite and transform lives. With each match, these young athletes not only fight for victory but also build friendships and memories that will last forever. As the World Championship progresses, the eyes of Peruvian fans are on this group, which, through their effort and dedication, continues to leave a mark on the history of national volleyball.
