As the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League season approaches, Amazon Prime has solidified its role in broadcasting one of Europe's most prestigious football tournaments. The streaming giant, which already holds broadcasting rights for the Champions League in Italy and Germany, extended its reach into the UK and Ireland with a three-year deal inked in July 2022. This partnership allows Amazon to air one match per week on Tuesdays, adding to its portfolio that includes Premier League fixtures. The Champions League play-offs kick off tonight, with the league phase draw set for August 29. This season marks a significant shift in format, replacing the traditional group stage with a league-phase system. Under this new structure, each team will compete in eight matches—four at home and four away—against different opponents, culminating in a single combined table of 36 teams. The top eight will secure automatic spots in the round of 16, while teams ranked ninth through 24th will enter a knockout round for the remaining eight slots. Amazon Prime's coverage will focus on the "top-pick" match of the Tuesday night fixtures, particularly if an English club is involved. However, with only one game broadcast on Tuesdays, the platform will not air any final matches of the league phase, which will occur simultaneously on Wednesdays in late January. Gabby Logan, a familiar face from the BBC’s sports coverage, will lead the broadcasts, supported by a star-studded punditry team. This lineup includes Clarence Seedorf, a four-time Champions League winner, along with former players such as Daniel Sturridge, Frank Lampard, Gael Clichy, Josie Henning, and Laura Georges. Commentary will be provided by Alan Shearer and Jon Champion, while Mark Clattenburg will offer insights as the referee analyst. In an effort to enhance the viewing experience, Amazon has focused on reducing latency, ensuring that viewers experience minimal delays when watching matches. With a commitment to keeping delays under ten seconds, the platform's technology aims for synchronization across devices, whether streamed on a phone, computer, or television. Additionally, Amazon's innovative use of Artificial Intelligence promises real-time highlights and a substitute indicator to keep viewers informed about team changes. Existing Prime subscribers will not incur any additional costs to access Champions League matches, maintaining a subscription fee of £8.99 per month. However, fans seeking additional fixtures will need a separate subscription to Discovery+ Premium, priced at £30.99 monthly. Beyond football, Amazon Prime has exciting projects lined up, including a documentary about Sir Kenny Dalglish, the legendary former Liverpool player and manager. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia, known for his work on sports documentaries like "Maradona" and "Senna," the film is set to release in 2025 and has already garnered Dalglish's enthusiastic participation. In addition, Amazon has also announced a forthcoming four-part documentary titled "Four Kings," chronicling the careers of notable British boxers from the 1990s, including Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis. This diverse content lineup reflects Amazon Prime's strategic move to capture the hearts of sports fans while expanding its offerings beyond live sports.
