In an effort to breathe new life into the traditional sport of pétanque, the City of Bath Pétanque Club (CoBPC) is launching a campaign to attract a younger demographic ahead of its exciting 2024 Friendship Games. Scheduled for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, the event promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent, as teams from across Europe converge at the club's impressive venue at Larkhall Football Club, the largest pétanque facility in the country. With 16 meticulously maintained pistes capable of hosting up to 100 players, Larkhall Football Club provides the perfect backdrop for this prestigious tournament. The CoBPC’s initiative to engage younger players is not just about increasing numbers; it represents a strategic move to ensure the longevity and vitality of the sport. The club's treasurer, Cary Bush, emphasized the importance of this outreach, stating, "We have performed reasonably well in the past. The club is growing and we want to continue going through this rotational tournament with newer, younger players." Pétanque, which involves players taking turns to throw metal balls as close as possible to a target ball, is often associated with leisurely afternoons in the sun. However, the international competition at Bath aims to showcase a more dynamic and competitive side of the game. The Friendship Games will not only highlight skill and strategy but also serve as a vibrant social gathering, celebrating the camaraderie that the sport fosters among players from diverse backgrounds. To attract younger players, CoBPC plans to implement various initiatives, including outreach programs in local schools and universities, training sessions designed for beginners, and community events that emphasize fun and engagement. Additionally, the club is exploring partnerships with youth organizations to create a more inclusive environment that welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels. As the pétanque community prepares for this high-profile tournament, the hope is that by appealing to the younger generation, the sport can secure its place in the hearts of future players and maintain its relevance in an increasingly fast-paced world. With the backdrop of international competition, the CoBPC is poised to not only showcase the sport's competitive edge but also to cultivate a new wave of pétanque enthusiasts who will carry the torch for years to come.
