Chelsea's midfielder Conor Gallagher finds himself in a peculiar situation as the club navigates a complex transfer window. According to head coach Enzo Maresca, Gallagher is currently training away from the main first-team squad and will not be available for selection in the upcoming match against Manchester City on Sunday. At the heart of this development is Gallagher's potential move to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old England international was spotted at Atletico's Metropolitano Stadium after Chelsea reportedly accepted a £33 million bid from the Spanish side. However, the transfer's completion has hit a snag due to the collapse of a deal involving striker Samu Omorodion moving in the opposite direction. This has left Atletico unable to finalize the funds required to secure Gallagher’s services. As Chelsea explores other transfer avenues, including a potential deal for forward Joao Felix from Atletico, Gallagher has been recalled to Cobham training ground where he is currently training separately. Maresca addressed Gallagher's situation in a recent press conference, stating, "Conor is back and training a bit apart. He is doing some medical tests and training, and he won't be involved in this game." He emphasized that Gallagher is actively trying to find a resolution with the club, hoping for a situation that satisfies all parties involved. Maresca's comments also shed light on Chelsea's crowded squad, which currently boasts 43 senior players. With Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah, and Romelu Lukaku training under the guidance of former goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, the head coach expressed a pragmatic approach to managing the team's roster. "We've been in America with 28 or 29 players, so it has been quite good managing the squad; the other players are training apart," he noted, reflecting on the challenges of overseeing such a large group. Looking ahead, Maresca remains optimistic about potential new signings despite the sheer volume of players already in the squad. Chelsea has been linked not only to Felix but also to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, indicating a continued ambition to strengthen the team ahead of the season. In terms of injuries, the coach confirmed that only Reece James will be unavailable for the match against Manchester City, as he serves a suspension following a red card received in the previous season. As Chelsea approaches this critical game, the focus remains on what lies ahead, both in the immediate match and the ongoing transfer negotiations, as they seek to shape their squad for the challenges to come.
