The Arequipa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIA) has expressed its support for the transfer of the Majes-Siguas water project to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Midagri), a decision considered crucial for the sustainable development of the region. Julio Cáceres, president of the CCIA, emphasized the need to promote initiatives that contribute to the improvement of water resource management, which is vital for agriculture and the local economy. In a recent interview with the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), Cáceres underscored that the country is facing a critical moment that requires concerted action from various economic guilds. "The country needs the right push, and I believe that what we should do from the guilds is to be promoters so that state management is realized in projects like the one I mentioned," he stated, emphasizing the fundamental role of collaboration between the private and public sectors. The Majes-Siguas project, which comprises two components, I and II, has become a symbol of hope for those seeking better water management in Arequipa. Cáceres stated that, being under the direction of the central government, it is expected that the necessary technical and financial capacity will be available to carry out the execution of this ambitious project, which promises to improve water availability for agriculture and, consequently, the quality of life for the region's inhabitants. The year 2023 has proven to be a challenge for Arequipa, which experienced a 3.2% drop in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the last quarter. Cáceres expressed optimism about the prospects for the coming year, expecting that the second half of 2024 will close with regional GDP growth of around 2.2% to 2.3%. This projection indicates the potential for economic recovery that exists, provided that the right projects are implemented and a conducive environment for investment is fostered. In addition to revitalizing the Majes-Siguas project, Cáceres highlighted the importance of initiatives like the Tía María project, which, although controversial, could significantly contribute to Arequipa's economic development. "Obviously, we need to be value generators, jobs as direct generators, and of course, promote projects like Tía María that must somehow, collaterally, generate a lot of value for the development of the Arequipa region," emphasized the CCIA president. Mining activity was also a central point in the conversation. Cáceres considered that mining remains the main source of income for the region, representing more than 35% of Arequipa's GDP. This sector is not only vital for the local economy but also acts as a driver of economic dynamism in the region, with the port of Matarani standing out as one of the most important for copper concentrate exports worldwide. However, the development of these projects and the improvement in resource management are not without challenges. Social opposition, environmental concerns, and the need for constant dialogue between communities and companies are factors that must be considered to avoid conflicts and promote harmonious development. Cáceres called for cooperation among the various stakeholders involved, highlighting that the success of these initiatives will depend on the willingness to work together in search of comprehensive solutions. The impact of the Majes-Siguas project, in particular, goes beyond agriculture. Its implementation is expected to contribute to strengthening water infrastructure, which is a critical aspect for the industrial and commercial development of Arequipa. Optimizing water resources will benefit not only farmers but also businesses that rely on a reliable water supply. In conclusion, the position of the CCIA and its president, Julio Cáceres, highlights the importance of proactivity in public and private management to ensure the sustainable development of Arequipa. As the country faces economic challenges, collaboration and the promotion of key projects like Majes-Siguas will be essential to achieving growth that is inclusive and equitable for all Arequipeños. The hope for a more prosperous future for the region lies in the hands of those willing to work together, fostering dialogue and responsible investment.
