In an ambitious move to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainability, Los Angeles is preparing to host the 2028 Olympics in a way that has never been attempted before: a "no-car Games." Mayor Karen Bass announced plans for a comprehensive public transportation initiative that will require all spectators to travel to the Olympic venues using only public transit. This approach aims to create a greener and more efficient environment for one of the world's largest sporting events. At a recent press conference in Paris, where the 2024 Olympic Games are concluding, Bass emphasized the significance of this initiative in a city historically defined by its car-centric culture. "That's a feat in Los Angeles -- we've always been in love with our cars," she remarked. To facilitate this monumental task, more than 3,000 buses will be needed, and the city plans to source these vehicles from across the United States. The logistics of managing the influx of spectators during the Games will also involve a strategic approach to the city's workforce. Mayor Bass suggested a dialogue with major employers to consider staggering work hours during the event. "We’ve learned from COVID that we do have essential workers, people that must come to work. But if you limit it to that, it’s going to be a lot easier," she explained, referring to the potential for remote work arrangements during the Games. The organizing committee for the 2028 Games has already unveiled a detailed venue plan, showcasing a mix of iconic locations. Events like swimming will take place at SoFi Stadium, while gymnastics will be held at the Crypto.com Arena. Track and field events are set for USC's Memorial Coliseum, further embedding the Games into the very fabric of Los Angeles. In addition, venues located in Long Beach will host a variety of aquatic and team sports, while equestrian events will be held in Temecula, a significant distance away. Despite some venues being located outside of Los Angeles, L.A. 2028 chairperson Casey Wasserman is determined to showcase the city’s unique character throughout the Games. He emphasized that "the 2028 Games will be authentically Los Angeles," hinting at the cultural richness that will be on display. The closing ceremony of the 2024 Games is set to provide a glimpse of this cultural flair, featuring performances from prominent American artists such as H.E.R. and Snoop Dogg. While the city's ambitious plans may challenge long-standing habits, the "no-car Games" initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to hosting a major international event. As Los Angeles seeks to redefine its relationship with transportation and foster a sustainable atmosphere, the world will be watching closely to see how this groundbreaking vision unfolds in 2028.
