In a disappointing start to the season, Glentoran succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Crusaders at The Oval, leaving manager Declan Devine frustrated as his side failed to bounce back from a critical mistake. The lone goal of the match came from Kieran Offord, who capitalized on a defensive blunder to score on his debut for the Crues just before the half-hour mark. Devine did not mince words when reflecting on the goal, describing it as a "shambles" that encapsulated Glentoran's performance on the night. “The goal just sums up the performance really,” he lamented during his post-match interview with BBC Sport NI. “It was a bit of a shambles in terms of the goal we gave away, and I don't think we really recovered from that.” Despite fielding a front line consisting of three strikers and two wingers, Glentoran struggled to trouble Crusaders’ goalkeeper. Devine expressed his disappointment with the lack of attacking potency, stating, “We didn’t test their goalkeeper enough, and that is obviously a disappointing factor.” Taking over the managerial role on an interim basis in March and being appointed permanently in April, Devine was eager to instill a strong start for his team. However, he noted a failure to get into gear, remarking, “We didn't get going, we weren't good enough with the ball, and the goal we gave away let it affect us for a period of the game.” Looking forward, Devine remained optimistic despite the setback, reminding fans that the season is long and filled with both highs and lows. “We've said this all along - there are going to be ups and downs. Tonight has been a down but it's the first game of the season. We'll take our lessons, we'll come away and reassess it and we'll go from there.” As Glentoran prepares for the next challenge, the focus will be on addressing the defensive issues that plagued them in this opener, while rekindling the attacking threat that their supporters yearn to see. The road ahead may be rocky, but with determination and a willingness to learn, Devine is determined to turn the tide for his squad.
