Mónica Gallese de Osma has become a prominent name in the Peruvian fashion scene, especially after being selected to design the uniforms that will be worn by the Peruvian delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This significant assignment not only marks a milestone in her career but is also infused with a deep sense of pride and connection to her country. She received the news of her selection about two and a half months ago, and the emotional impact was immediate. "I was almost in tears at that very moment," recalls Mónica, who has dedicated herself to the fashion world for over a decade. The journey to create these uniforms was not without challenges. Mónica identifies three major obstacles she had to overcome: limited time, a tight budget, and specific guidelines that needed to be followed in the designs. "I had to deliver 111 kits, around 1500 pieces including shirts, jackets, caps, and pants in a very short time," she explains. This pressure heightened even more when considering the limited resources available. However, the designer found support in factories and her own workshop, where her team worked tirelessly, even on night shifts, to meet the goal. The design process not only focused on aesthetics but also had to align with the delegation's regulations. "You have to work with the colors of the flag, which are red and white," Mónica states, explaining that her initial proposal for a more avant-garde design was adjusted to a more practical and accessible vision. In this way, a balance was achieved that respects Peruvian identity without falling into repetitive clichés. Additionally, all the fabrics used are locally produced, highlighting the importance of Peruvian labor in the project. Mónica, who is an administrator by profession, has been involved in fashion for over twelve years. Her experience includes managing a multi-brand store and launching her own brand, Fortuna, in Paris. However, she acknowledges that designing the Olympic uniforms is the most honorable work of her career. "The fact that I was called to design the Olympic uniforms fills me with pride," she expresses, emphasizing the uniqueness of this experience in her career. Among the pieces in the kit, Mónica highlights two that hold a special emotional attachment for her. The retro-inspired windbreaker and the red blazer, which has captured the attention of many, are her favorites. However, she clarifies that they are not for sale, as they are part of the exclusive collection for Peruvian athletes. This adds a special character to the garments, turning them into symbols of the effort and dedication behind every detail. The excitement of seeing the Peruvian delegation wearing her designs is indescribable for Mónica. "It has all been a mix of emotion, happiness, adrenaline, and a lot of stress to make sure everything works and comes out perfectly," she confesses. To not miss the climax of this experience, she decided to buy a ticket to Paris and an entry to witness the Olympic Games in person, reaffirming her commitment to the event and her country. Beyond her work as a designer, Mónica is also passionate about sports. In particular, she mentions her love for acrobatics, an activity she practiced since childhood. Additionally, she enjoys tennis and golf in her daily life. This connection to sports not only inspires her in her personal life but also allows her to better understand the needs and expectations of the athletes who will wear her creations. The legacy of Mónica Gallese de Osma goes beyond fashion; it represents Peruvian culture and is a testament to the potential of local talent on an international platform like the Olympic Games. Her story is a reminder of how passion and dedication can transcend borders, uniting people through creativity and national identity. With each garment showcased in Paris, a piece of the Peruvian heart will be carried, a testament to the collective effort and vision of a designer who, with her "red jacket," has woven a path toward hope and pride in every thread.
