Leon Reid, the former Olympic sprinter and Commonwealth Games medallist, is making significant strides in the world of football by enhancing the running techniques of Brighton & Hove Albion players. Collaborating with the club, Reid has developed bespoke training sessions aimed at improving the athletes’ efficiency on the pitch while reducing the risk of injuries. Among those benefitting from Reid's expertise are Paraguay forward Julio Enciso, Ecuador attacker Jeremy Sarmiento, and Argentinian left-back Valentin Barco. The sessions are meticulously designed to not only bolster their physical robustness but also to identify and address specific weaknesses that could lead to injuries. Reid's philosophy hinges on a crucial distinction: while footballers excel in their sport, they often neglect the broader athletic conditioning that can enhance their performance and longevity in the game. Reid's athletic background is impressive; he represented Great Britain as a junior before competing for Northern Ireland, where he earned a bronze medal in the 200 meters at the 2018 Commonwealth Games—Northern Ireland's first medal in that event in nearly three decades. He also reached the semi-finals in the 200 meters at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. These experiences contribute to his understanding of what it takes to be a high-level athlete, and he believes that footballers must embrace the mindset of being athletes first. “Footballers usually class themselves as footballers, not athletes, but athletes are more robust; they break down less often,” Reid explains. His training sessions focus on fundamental movements, such as bounds, which are crucial for footballers but often overlooked. He aims to build a framework that helps players understand the importance of proper technique: “The more technical they are with their running, the lower the risk of injury.” Reid’s work is not limited to the men’s team; he has also engaged with players from Brighton's Women’s Super League team, ensuring that athletes across genders receive tailored attention to enhance their performance. He emphasizes the importance of conditioning, targeting specific muscle groups that can support better athletic performance. Despite his successful athletic career, Reid's life has not been without challenges. He spent his childhood in foster care, facing numerous obstacles, including a court case related to a former roommate's criminal activities. However, he has used these experiences to fuel his drive in the sports world, aspiring to be a beacon of hope for children who face similar adversities. “I actively chose to step away from a criminal life at an early age,” Reid states, reaffirming his commitment to helping others. Following his retirement from athletics in April 2023, Reid has transitioned into this new chapter of his career. His recent collaboration with Birmingham City forward Tyler Roberts in organizing a training camp in Marbella for footballers underscores his dedication to fostering a community of athletes who are eager to improve during the off-season. Reid's journey from a foster child to a world-class sprinter, and now a sought-after fitness instructor, serves as an inspiring testament to resilience and the power of mentorship. As he continues to work alongside Brighton & Hove Albion players, Reid embodies the spirit of athleticism, encouraging them to refine their skills and embrace their potential. "I enjoy working with top athletes who are hungry to achieve big things,” he concludes. With Reid’s guidance, these footballers are not just training to play; they are training to excel.
