The recent announcement by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) regarding the incorporation of natural gas in hospitals represents a significant step in diversifying Peru's energy matrix. During the inauguration ceremony of the natural gas system at the Edgardo Rebagliati Martins Hospital, Minister Rómulo Mucho highlighted the importance of this resource for the healthcare sector and its positive impact on patient care. Mucho explained that coordination is underway with the Ministry of Health and the Social Health Insurance (Essalud) to bring natural gas to more hospitals in various regions of the country. This initiative aims not only to improve the energy efficiency of healthcare facilities but also to generate significant savings in operational costs, allowing the saved resources to be allocated to other critical areas of medical care. The official emphasized that the plan includes supplying ten hospitals in a first phase, which are essential to the public health system. Among them are the Daniel Alcides Carrión Hospital in Callao, the Sergio E. Bernales Hospital in Comas, and others located in San Juan de Lurigancho and Trujillo. This selection reflects the government's interest in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in areas with high demand for medical services. Additionally, the minister stressed that the mass adoption of natural gas will not be limited to domestic use. The goal is to integrate this resource across various sectors, from transportation to small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as in social support institutions. This comprehensive approach not only contributes to the transition to cleaner energy but also reinforces the government's commitment to sustainable development. The positive impact of this initiative is also framed within a broader context of economic reactivation. Mucho mentioned that his administration is focused on promoting projects that stimulate the economy, including the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons. Reactivating specific oil blocks to increase national crude production is a strategy aimed at generating employment and opportunities in local communities. In this regard, the Executive President of EsSalud, María Aguilar, praised the joint effort between government institutions, highlighting that the implementation of natural gas in hospitals is not only an advancement in terms of infrastructure but also represents a commitment to environmental care. This approach aligns with global trends in sustainability and environmental responsibility. Moreover, the availability of natural gas in hospitals is expected to contribute to the reduction of pollutant emissions by replacing more harmful energy sources. This energy transition is crucial in a context where the climate crisis demands concrete and effective actions. The Minem's desire to expand this program to other regions of the country is an aspect that deserves attention. Improving hospital infrastructure through the use of natural gas can result in more efficient care, reducing wait times and increasing responsiveness to health emergencies. However, it is essential that this initiative is carried out in a coordinated manner and that mechanisms are established to monitor its effectiveness. Collaboration between the energy sector and the health sector will be crucial to ensure that the benefits of this new energy matrix reach all corners of the country. Finally, the implementation of natural gas in hospitals is not only a technological advancement but also symbolizes a cultural shift in how energy is perceived and utilized in the healthcare sector. As the country moves towards a more diversified energy matrix, it is vital to maintain a focus on the well-being of the population and the protection of the environment.
