After a significant hiatus since the closure of the "Yellow Duckmarine" tours in 2014, Liverpool is set to welcome back amphibious vehicle tours with the launch of a new venture by Splash Tours Liverpool. This innovative experience promises to deliver a seamless transition between land and water, captivating both residents and visitors alike. The history of amphibious tours in Liverpool took a downturn when the previous operator, known for using World War II DUKW trucks, faced tragic incidents in which two of its vehicles sank in Salthouse Dock. An investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) cited inadequate maintenance and failure to adhere to safety standards as the primary reasons behind the mishaps, ultimately leading to the cessation of the tours. In a revitalized effort to reinstate this unique mode of exploration, Splash Tours Liverpool has introduced a purpose-built amphibious vehicle that differentiates itself from its predecessors. Co-founder Ed Lumley expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it has been a long-standing dream to bring such tours to the city he adores. He hopes that this new offering will become a cherished part of Liverpool's vibrant visitor economy. The family-run operation, led by Graham Lumley and his children, aims to enhance the city’s already bustling attractions. Sean Morrison, the estate manager at Royal Albert Dock, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the excitement around adding Splash Tours to the dock's roster of attractions. He expressed his delight in providing an experience that allows guests to immerse themselves in Liverpool’s rich history while taking in the breathtaking views of the iconic waterfront. As the new tours prepare to launch, there is a palpable sense of optimism surrounding the venture. With enhanced safety features and modern engineering, Splash Tours Liverpool aims to not only attract tourists but also to rekindle local pride in the city’s maritime heritage. The return of amphibious tours marks another chapter in Liverpool’s ongoing commitment to delivering unique and memorable experiences that celebrate its historic landscape.
