In a commendable push towards improving digital infrastructure, Norfolk is making strides in enhancing access to full fibre broadband. As reported by the technology regulator Ofcom, 2023 has revealed that every district in the county was previously ranked in the bottom half of the UK league table concerning full fibre accessibility. However, recent investments and initiatives promise a brighter digital future for residents and businesses alike. Jane James, the Conservative county councillor responsible for innovation, highlighted a significant disparity in broadband service quality in the region. “Over 97% of Norfolk has superfast broadband connection, which is great, until you realize superfast is only 24 MB per second,” she noted, pointing to the limitations of the existing infrastructure that relies on outdated technology. The need for a more robust and faster connection has never been more pressing, as homes and businesses increasingly rely on high-speed internet for both work and leisure. The ongoing transformation being spearheaded by BT Openreach, which involves replacing traditional copper wires with full fibre connections, is a critical step towards rectifying this issue. Full fibre technology, which utilizes fibre optic cables to deliver broadband directly into homes and businesses, promises not only enhanced speeds but also greater reliability compared to the aging copper systems. James expressed optimism about this investment, stating that it could lead to better speeds, fewer drop-outs, and a more consistent online experience for Norfolk's residents. Recognizing the importance of collective effort, James's team has been actively lobbying for improved connectivity throughout the county. She emphasized the need for support from Norfolk's newly elected MPs to advocate for governmental backing in this essential endeavor. “We need to ensure that every corner of Norfolk can benefit from the advancements in technology,” she remarked. In addition to broadband improvements, James's office is also gathering vital data on mobile phone signal strength across the county. By employing trackers on the county's bin lorries, the team is collecting information on 5G connections, which will serve to better inform residents and policymakers alike. This initiative follows the recent transition where some 3G capacity was turned off to make way for 4G and 5G services. James firmly believes in the necessity of robust data to validate the claims made by service providers. “We need the evidence to make sure what they say they're providing they are actually providing,” she stated, underscoring the importance of accountability in the race to enhance Norfolk's digital landscape. As Norfolk looks to the future, the commitment to improving digital infrastructure not only stands to benefit local residents but also positions the county more favorably in an increasingly connected world. The shift towards full fibre broadband and improved mobile connectivity is not just a technological upgrade; it is a vital investment in the county's social and economic development, paving the way for new opportunities and growth.
