Botley Skatepark plans forge ahead after £200,000 raised Botley is set to witness the revival of its beloved skatepark, as plans have surged forward with an impressive £200,000 raised for its construction. The initiative, spearheaded by Ms. MacKeith, 74, traces back to the late 1980s when she first implored the council to establish the original park owing to her son's passion for skateboarding. The journey towards a new skatepark has been a resilient one, especially after the unfortunate vandalism incident in 2009 where the previous park fell victim to a van being driven into it and set ablaze. Ms. MacKeith, the driving force behind this endeavor, expressed her elation, stating, "I've spent years and years trying to make this happen and when it finally does happen I'll be able to die happy," in conversation with the BBC. The financial backing for this project has been substantial and diverse. The FCC Community Action Fund allocated a generous £100,000 grant, with an additional £20,000 contribution from the National Lottery Community Fund and £10,000 from the Cumnor Parish Council. Botley and North Hinksey Parish Council are also set to channel funds from the Community Infrastructure Levy towards the skatepark. A significant portion of the funds has been garnered through the efforts of the Botley Sk8s group, which organized a series of local events including film showings, roller discos, and quiz nights. Following the green light on planning permission in August of last year, the council proceeded with a meticulous two-year process involving vigorous discussions with a representative panel of skaters and parents to finalize the new design. The completion of the skatepark is anticipated by Christmas, with an official launch scheduled to coincide with the Easter festivities. The forthcoming skatepark holds the promise of not only providing a hub for skateboard enthusiasts but also fostering community engagement and recreational activities for residents of Botley. The collective efforts and investments put into this project signify a triumph of community spirit and determination, paving the way for a promising and vibrant recreational space in the heart of Botley.
