Wirral campaigners have secured a significant victory as councillors have backed the bid to reopen a community golf course in the area. The efforts by the Brackenwood Community Golf Limited (BCGL) have received support, raising hopes for the course to be operational once again by 2025. Keith Marsh, the golf club secretary, expressed delight at the decision, noting that the news was met with joy by club members. However, Marsh also highlighted the bittersweet nature of the victory, mentioning that some members had passed away before witnessing the potential reopening of the beloved course. During a meeting attended by Marsh and approximately 40 club members, the council's endorsement of the project was seen as a positive step. Marsh commended the council for standing by the community, emphasizing the importance of faith in the political process to bring about positive change. He stressed the need to now focus on the practical steps required to move the project forward. The journey to reopen the golf course has faced its share of challenges. While BCGL had initially received final approval from councillors in July 2023, a setback occurred in March 2024 when the council announced that the planned transfer would not proceed. This decision was attributed to RM Estates withdrawing their support, leading to the consideration of an alternative proposal. A council report had suggested repurposing the land for various sports activities and enhancing natural habitats. Despite this recommendation, councillors overwhelmingly voted to continue supporting the golf club's bid to assume control of the course. The involvement of LinkGolf, known for managing former council-owned courses, has provided additional backing to the rejuvenation efforts. Following extensive discussions between council representatives, golf club officials, and LinkGolf, the Labour party proposed a path forward that involved moving ahead with the golf club and LinkGolf's joint proposal, albeit with certain conditions imposed due to the unique circumstances surrounding the project. With the renewed support from councillors and the collaboration with LinkGolf, the campaign to reopen the community golf course in Wirral is gaining momentum. The determination and perseverance of the campaigners, coupled with the council's backing, offer hope for a vibrant and recreational future for the local community.
