In recent decades, we have witnessed a world that is far from the utopia proclaimed at the end of the Cold War. Instead of a scenario of peace and prosperity, we find ourselves immersed in a landscape marked by polarization, uncertainty, and, at times, dramatic events that shake society. One of these recent episodes that has shaken the political world is the assassination attempt against former President and Republican candidate of the United States, Donald Trump, during a campaign speech in Pennsylvania. While Trump emerged unharmed, one person lost their life at the hands of the assailant, who also died in the confrontation. This tragic incident forces us to reflect on the current political climate, where words have direct consequences on society. Extreme polarization and inflammatory language have permeated the discourse of political leaders from different countries, contributing to creating a toxic environment that can lead to acts of violence like the one suffered by Trump. Politics, far from being a space for dialogue and harmony, has become a minefield where ideological differences translate into verbal attacks and, in extreme cases, physical violence. It is crucial to emphasize that responsibility lies both with those who deliver hate-filled and confrontational speeches and with those who consume and replicate them. The legitimacy of a democratic system is threatened when violence becomes normalized in political discourse, when threats and calls for confrontation become commonplace. The attack against Trump is a stark reminder that no difference of opinion, no matter how radical, can justify resorting to violence as a means of conflict resolution. In this sense, it is essential for political leaders to adopt a stance of responsibility and caution in their public communications. The use of bellicose language only serves to exacerbate tensions and fuel existing polarization in society. Joe Biden's recent apology for his statements inciting to target Trump "in the crosshairs" is a clear example of how leaders must be aware of the impact of their words and assume the consequences of them. Political violence is not an exclusive phenomenon of the United States, but also manifests in other countries, including our own. Examples such as threats of shooting political leaders by prominent figures in the national scene highlight the urgent need to promote constructive and respectful dialogue in the political arena. The ongoing electoral campaign should be a space for the confrontation of ideas and proposals, not physical confrontation. In a democracy, violence can never be a legitimate means to settle differences. It is in civilized debate, in the exchange of arguments, and in mutual respect where a democratic and pluralistic society is built. Politicians who engage in violent and provocative speeches not only jeopardize the stability of the system but also fuel a climate of confrontation that can lead to tragedies like the one that occurred with Trump. It is imperative that both political leaders and the citizenry as a whole categorically reject violence as a political tool. Only through respecting diversity of opinions and fostering dialogue can a conducive environment for peaceful coexistence and the strengthening of democracy be built. The assassination attempt against Trump should serve as a warning of the devastating consequences that can arise from the irresponsible use of words in the political sphere. In times of polarization and extremism, moderation and respect must prevail as fundamental pillars of our democratic coexistence.
