The Peruvian Automotive Association (AAP) has announced that Jaime Graña Belmont will assume the position of general manager in the automotive guild that brings together more than 240 companies in the sector in the country. This announcement comes after the departure of Adrián Revilla Vergara, who held the position from May 2019 until July of this year. With extensive experience in executive positions in various economic sectors, Graña becomes a key figure at a crucial moment for the Peruvian automotive industry. When evaluating the performance of the automotive sector in the first half of the year, a 13% decrease in the sale of light vehicles is observed, reaching a total of 75,521 units sold. These results have been less encouraging than anticipated by the AAP, which expected a greater dynamism starting in May, when a more solid economic recovery was foreseen at the national level. In contrast, the heavy vehicle segment reported a growth of 4.4%, with the sale of 7,515 units in the same period. This increase is attributed to the boost of sectors such as construction and mining, which have increased the demand for this type of vehicles due to the increase in public spending on infrastructure and works at the regional and local levels. On the other hand, the sale of minibuses and buses experienced a significant growth of 25.5%, reaching 1,286 units sold. This segment has been one of the most dynamic so far this year, driven by the recovery of activities such as interprovincial transport and tourism, indicating a positive trend in certain key economic sectors. In the case of smaller vehicles, there was a 4.4% decrease in the sale of 164,318 units between January and June 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. This decline is reflected in both the sale of motorcycles, with 115,106 units sold (-3.8%), and in three-wheeled motorcycles, with 49,212 units sold (-5.9%), showing a more complex outlook in this segment. Jaime Graña takes on the general management of the AAP in a challenging context for the Peruvian automotive industry, which faces challenges such as the slowdown in the sale of light and smaller vehicles, despite the recovery in other segments. His experience and leadership will be essential to drive strategies that promote the reactivation and sustained growth of the sector, in line with the projections of economic development at the national level.
