Hockley Rainbow Road in Nottingham, a symbol of inclusivity and pride for the LGBTQ+ community, is set to undergo a vibrant makeover before the upcoming Notts Pride event. Councillor Coral Jenkins confirmed during a meeting that the iconic rainbow road will be refreshed, bringing a burst of color and representation to the city streets. The project is being spearheaded by the city's business improvement district, It's in Nottingham, with the support of the city council. The repainted rainbow will not only showcase the traditional colors but will also incorporate five new colors to better represent diversity within the community. Black and brown stripes will be added to symbolize people of color, while light blue, light pink, and white will stand for the transgender community. The funding for this initiative, amounting to £4,950, has been secured from the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund, highlighting the commitment to promoting diversity and equality in Nottingham. Alex Flint, the chief executive of It's in Nottingham, expressed excitement about the project aligning with their mission of fostering an inclusive and vibrant community. Sam Harvey from the Nottingham Pastel Project, a grassroots organization dedicated to creating a safe space for trans individuals, also voiced support for the initiative. Harvey emphasized the significance of Broad Street as a focal point for the queer community in Nottingham and praised the rainbow road as a symbol of unity and belonging. The refreshed rainbow road will be unveiled just in time for the 2024 Notts Pride event scheduled for July 27th. The event will kick off with a march through the city center, culminating in a lively market and stage in Sneinton Lanes and Sneinton Market. Attendees can look forward to a diverse program of entertainment, including performances by popular artists such as Tia Kofi from RuPaul's Drag Race UK vs the World and Kelly O'Brien, known for her Dolly Parton tribute act. Notts Pride, a long-standing celebration dating back to 1997, typically draws over 7,000 LGBTQ+ individuals and allies, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere. The upcoming event promises to be a colorful and joyous occasion, further solidifying Nottingham's reputation as a welcoming and inclusive city for all.
