Warrington Disability Awareness Day is gearing up for what is expected to be a record-breaking turnout this year, with thousands of individuals set to attend the event at Walton Hall Gardens. This event, which is considered one of the largest in the world dedicated to people with disabilities, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1992. Originally conceived as a "one-off" event by David Thompson and two friends from a support group, Disability Awareness Day has since grown exponentially, becoming a cornerstone in the community. With over 200 exhibits and 220 organisations participating, the event serves as a vital platform for showcasing services, products, and resources tailored to individuals with disabilities. Mr. Thompson, the visionary behind the event and founder of Warrington Disability Partnership (WDP), has expressed his gratitude for the remarkable growth of Disability Awareness Day over the years. Having personally experienced the challenges of living with a disability after breaking his back playing American football in 1989, Mr. Thompson's dedication to creating a more inclusive society has been unwavering. With an estimated total attendance of around 600,000 people across all past events and 20,000 attendees just last year, the impact of Disability Awareness Day is undeniable. Mr. Thompson's efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he was recently honored as an honorary freeman of Warrington in recognition of his significant contributions to the community. Reflecting on the event's reach, Mr. Thompson proudly stated, "We are pretty certain there is nothing bigger in the UK and we are pretty sure it is the biggest in the world." This sentiment is reinforced by the event's expansion into international territories, with spin-off gatherings now being held in Gibraltar and Cameroon. As Disability Awareness Day in Warrington continues to evolve and inspire, it serves as a beacon of empowerment and advocacy for individuals with disabilities worldwide. The event's ongoing success underscores the importance of fostering inclusivity and celebrating the diverse abilities of all individuals within our communities.
