Politics

The political landscape in the European Union has taken a significant turn with the recent formation of the far-right group in the European Parliament called "Patriots for Europe." Comprised of 84 Members of the European Parliament from thirteen political parties and twelve different nationalities, this new faction aims to counter what they see as a political "hegemony" in the EU and represent the "millions of Europeans who want a change." In a press conference held in Brussels, the head of the French National Rally parliamentary delegation, Jean-Paul Garraud, highlighted the diversity of this group, which far exceeds the requirements set by the European Parliament. Garraud emphasized Patriots for Europe's intention to oppose the current political evolution in European institutions and work towards a European Union more faithful to its founding principles, respecting the identities and sovereignties of member countries. Among the top priorities for this new bloc are the migration pact and the Green Deal, on which they seek to exert influence to counter what they consider a hegemonic trend from the European Commission and the majority of the European Parliament up to now. This approach aligns with the critical stance towards migration policy and the centralization of decision-making in Brussels expressed by its members. The first vice-president of Patriots for Europe, Hungarian Kinga Gál, stressed that the group represents those Europeans demanding a change in current policies, rejecting political agreements that maintain the status quo. Gál pointed out the intention to work towards preserving Europe's Judeo-Christian roots and opposing illegal migration, thus setting the agenda they aim to promote in the European Parliament. However, the formation of this new far-right bloc raises questions about its possible marginalization in positions of responsibility in the European Parliament, following a likely cordon sanitaire similar to the one faced by its predecessor in the past legislature. Faced with this situation, Vox MEP Jorge Buxadé questioned whether it would be fair to exclude millions of Europeans from parliamentary activity and silence their voice. Buxadé emphasized the importance of restoring democracy and political freedom in Europe, ensuring that all voices are equitably represented in Parliament. In this sense, the creation of Patriots for Europe seeks not only to challenge the supposed political hegemony in the European Union but also to promote a change in decision-making and defend the values they consider fundamental for the continent. As this new far-right group consolidates in the European Parliament, uncertainty and debate about its role and presence in European politics will intensify. With critical stances towards current policies and a clear agenda for change, Patriots for Europe positions itself as a relevant actor in the complex political landscape of the European Union, whose impact and reach only time will reveal.
