In his attempt to return to the White House, Donald Trump has made it clear that migration will be the key theme of his campaign, and if he wins, it will be a crucial point in his strategy to address different areas of government, including trade. His team of advisors has emphasized the importance of maintaining strict surveillance at the border and has suggested that past policies, such as the Migrant Protection Protocols, could be reinstated in a potential second administration. Corey Lewandowski, one of the close advisors to former President Trump, stated in an interview with Expansión that migration will play a fundamental role in all decisions made in a second term, emphasizing the need for a fair immigration system that discourages illegal migration to the United States. In this regard, he mentioned the effectiveness of the Migrant Protection Protocols, also known as "Remain in Mexico," implemented during the Trump presidency. These protocols, established in January 2019 in response to the massive arrival of migrants mainly from Central America, required individuals to remain in Mexican territory while awaiting their appointment with U.S. authorities to apply for asylum. Although the measure was criticized for its impact on the human rights of migrants and the conditions they were in, Lewandowski considers it successful and attributes the decrease in the migration crisis at that time to its implementation. However, with Joe Biden taking office, there was a significant change in immigration policy, with the repeal of the Migrant Protection Protocols in February 2021. This decision has been a subject of debate and criticism from the Trump administration and its supporters, who argue that the current migration crisis could have been avoided if that policy had been maintained. Brian Hughes, another advisor to the Trump campaign, has emphasized the importance of addressing migration as one of the main concerns of Americans and has stated that resolving this crisis is essential to progress in other national interest issues. In this sense, he has pointed out that illegality cannot be the basis of an immigration system and that effective solutions are needed to address this issue. Despite the criticisms and controversies surrounding the Trump administration's immigration policy and the actions of the current administration led by Biden, migration remains a point of conflict and debate in the American political arena. While Trump and his advisors advocate for more restrictive and border control policies, the Biden administration has been criticized for its focus on border security and measures taken against irregular immigration. In this context, migration looms as a central issue in the upcoming presidential campaign in the United States, with possible repercussions in areas such as trade and international relations. As the elections approach, the candidates' stance on this issue will be crucial in defining the direction of immigration policy in the country in the coming years.
