In a small corner of the bohemian district of Barranco, a group of young dreamers gathered at the Juanito bar, amidst snacks and beers, to shape a project that would become an icon of circus culture in Lima: La Tarumba. Four decades ago, amidst the sadness that prevailed in the 80s, this circus was born as a protest filled with hope and faith, inspired by the circus traditions that have marked generations in the Peruvian capital. From its humble beginnings on the streets of Lima, La Tarumba has managed to forge a solid and successful trajectory, finding its home in a large tent that stands between Leoncio Prado street and Paseo de la República avenue. Fernando Zevallos, leader of this circus company, fondly remembers that February 12, 1984, the date La Tarumba was founded, and highlights the commitment to bring joy and democratize happiness through their shows. Throughout its 40-year history, La Tarumba has experienced memorable moments that have marked its evolution and growth as one of Peru's most emblematic circuses. From its first show abroad in 1986, to the acquisition of its first big tent in 2003, the company has known how to reinvent itself and adapt to changes, always keeping its philosophy of defending life through circus art alive. In their new production titled "Quereres," La Tarumba invites us to reflect on the love and passion that drives its artists to move forward every day. With a cast of over 35 talented national and international artists, and a live band led by Amador "Chebo" Ballumbrosio, the show promises to surprise with unseen scenes, impressive acrobatics, and the characteristic humor of its clowns. Furthermore, for the first time in its history, La Tarumba will take its show outside of Lima, performing in cities like Trujillo and Arequipa at the end of the season in the capital. This expansion demonstrates the company's willingness to reach new audiences and share its message of joy and hope with an increasing number of spectators across the country. With an eye on the future, Fernando Zevallos and his team are preparing to continue bringing the magic of the circus to every corner of Peru, passing on their knowledge and values to the new generations of circus artists who join this family. Meanwhile, the colorful tent of La Tarumba will continue to be a haven of laughter, emotions, and unforgettable shows for all those seeking a moment of fun and happiness amidst their daily routine.
