The recent escalation of violence in Gaza has stirred up deep concerns worldwide as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the intense phase of fighting in the region may soon come to an end. Despite facing significant international opposition, the Israeli army has persisted in its current operation in the southern city of Rafah, positioning it as potentially the final major ground offensive in Gaza. Throughout this campaign, there have been devastating consequences, with Israeli strikes resulting in the deaths of numerous Palestinian civilians. However, there has been a noticeable reduction in the level of bombardment compared to previous assaults on Gaza City and Khan Younis. Israeli forces, supported by tanks, are still engaged in fierce battles with Palestinian fighters in the west of Rafah, and the destruction of buildings in the city continues. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have claimed success in severely degrading three out of the four Hamas battalions believed to be present in Rafah, a key objective for Israel. This achievement raises the possibility that the army may soon declare the completion of its operation in the area. Nonetheless, the ongoing violence has brought no relief to the people of Gaza, with daily reports of high casualty figures, ranging from 40 to 60 deaths recorded by the health ministry run by Hamas. While the situation remains volatile, Israel shows no signs of halting its strikes across Gaza, emphasizing Prime Minister Netanyahu's strategy of maintaining the freedom to launch attacks as deemed necessary, even after a full withdrawal of troops from the enclave. In Washington, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has been in discussions with top U.S. officials regarding what he referred to as Phase C of Israel's campaign, a transition to a less intensive stage of operations. Gallant emphasized that this shift to Phase C would have significant implications across various fronts, and that Israel is preparing for all possible scenarios both militarily and diplomatically. These discussions with U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin underscore the complexity and gravity of the situation in Gaza, signaling a potential continuation of the conflict beyond the current phase of fighting.
