On July 16th, the deadline for those interested in running for the upcoming presidential and congressional elections in Peru to affiliate with a political organization expires. However, just a few days before this deadline, the absence of emerging political leaders who have been able to connect with the population is raising concerns in the electoral scenario. Unlike previous election cycles, where figures with significant citizen support were already emerging at this stage, this time there are no leaders standing out in the polls. According to data from Ipsos Peru, two years before the 2016 presidential elections, names like Keiko Fujimori and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski were already mentioned with considerable levels of support, unlike the current situation. The party fragmentation, with around 30 political groups competing, coupled with the volatility of the Peruvian electorate that decides their vote in the final weeks, presents an uncertain scenario leading up to the elections. The possibility that candidates with low levels of support could become relevant contenders, as happened in 2021, does not contribute to the political stability or international projection of the country. In this context, it is concerning that the potential candidates with the most support are Keiko Fujimori and Antauro Humala, political figures who have been present in previous electoral processes. This lack of renewal and the absence of new leadership supporting the Constitution and the current economic model raise questions about the quality of the political offering in Peruvian democracy. The need for leaders who inspire trust, transparency, and competence in public management becomes imperative in a scenario where uncertainty and lack of fresh alternatives prevail. Choosing responsible and capable authorities is essential for the country's future and to avoid repeating situations of instability as experienced in the recent past. It is crucial for political parties and the general public to promote the emergence of new democratic leadership that represent the interests of Peruvian society and are committed to strengthening institutions and sustainable development in the country. The lack of attractive options in the current political landscape poses significant challenges in building a solid and representative democracy. With the closing of registrations for the elections approaching, it is necessary to reflect on the importance of having leaders who generate consensus, respect for diversity, and solid proposals to address the challenges facing Peru. The search for a leader capable of uniting the population, promoting economic growth, and ensuring governance becomes a priority in a context of political and social uncertainty. In this sense, Peruvian society must demand from its future candidates a real commitment to transparency, fighting against corruption, and defending democratic principles. The selection of suitable leaders is a fundamental step towards advancing towards a more solid and representative political system, where the citizenry can trust their leaders and the direction of the country.
