Intense fighting in Rafah seems to be nearing an end, according to statements made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Amidst the ongoing clashes, Netanyahu reiterated his rejection of the idea that the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority should take control of Gaza from Hamas. During an interview on Israeli television, Netanyahu emphasized the need for continued military demilitarization by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the establishment of a civil administration in Gaza. He suggested that with support from regional countries, this approach could pave the way for progress in the conflict. However, Netanyahu made it clear that he was not willing to support the establishment of a Palestinian state in Gaza or hand over control to the Palestinian Authority. Residents of Rafah reported further clashes in the city, while Israeli air strikes targeted Gaza City, resulting in casualties, including the director of emergency services of the Hamas-run health ministry. The IDF claimed that an aid distribution center hit in the airstrikes was being used by Hamas. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant is set to visit Washington to discuss the situation in Gaza and the escalating tensions with Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran. The Israeli military launched a campaign to combat Hamas following the group's attack on southern Israel on October 7th, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and hostages. Since then, more than 37,500 individuals have been reported killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. While precise figures on civilian versus combatant casualties are not available, the ministry stated that a significant number of children, women, and elderly individuals were among the deceased by the end of April. The situation in Gaza remains volatile, with the international community closely monitoring developments as efforts to bring about a resolution and lasting peace continue.
