The stillness and beauty that used to characterize Alma al-Shaab, a picturesque village in southern Lebanon, has been drastically disturbed by the conflict that has erupted in the region. Trapped in the midst of the fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, the inhabitants of this town face constant uncertainty and fear of being hit by an attack. With only about 100 remaining residents, Alma al-Shaab has been the target of numerous Israeli bombings in the past nine months. What was once a prosperous and peaceful place now lies marked by destruction and desolation, with houses reduced to rubble and agricultural and forest fields consumed by the fire of violence. The proximity of this village to the border with Israel makes it a strategic target amid the tension between both parties. Attacks and counterattacks have intensified, leaving a trail of devastation and forcing the population to leave their homes in search of safety in neighboring cities such as Beirut and Sidon. The accounts of survivors reflect the trauma and distress experienced daily in Alma al-Shaab. The uncertainty of when the next attack will occur, the constant sound of explosions, and the feeling of living in an eternal state of war have transformed the lives of those who once called this place home. Maria Shaya, a 31-year-old woman who grew up amidst violence and instability, sadly recalls how memories of a childhood marked by conflict contrast with the natural beauty of the environment in which she grew up. Nostalgia for a past of peace and tranquility mixes with the harsh reality of a present marked by violence and destruction. The community of Alma al-Shaab, mainly composed of people who have lived in this place for generations, clings to the hope of being able to return someday to their homes and rebuild what has been devastated by war. However, the uncertainty about the future and the fear of facing a fate similar to that of Palestinian refugees haunt them. As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues to take a toll on human lives and the infrastructure of the region, the international community watches with concern the escalation of violence on the border between Lebanon and Israel. Despite efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, the repercussions of this conflict are felt in every corner of Alma al-Shaab and in the hearts of those who long to return to a home that is no longer the same. Amidst desolation and suffering, the courage and perseverance of the inhabitants of Alma al-Shaab stand as a symbol of resistance in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges and dangers they face daily, their determination to preserve their identity and connection to their ancestral land gives them strength to move forward, in the hope that one day peace will reign again in their beloved Mediterranean village.
