However, the IDF clarified that the ceasefire does not extend to the southern Gaza Strip, with combat operations set to continue in Rafah. This announcement comes as hundreds of thousands of people have fled Rafah following Israeli troops' entry into the area, resulting in the closure of the Rafah crossing, a crucial point of entry for aid. Israel's military operation in Rafah aims to dismantle Hamas' presence, which it considers the group's "last major stronghold." Despite facing criticism from international agencies over the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, Israel has emphasized the necessity of its actions in Rafah. The situation in Gaza has been described as dire by the World Health Organization, with a significant portion of the population facing hunger and famine-like conditions. The recent escalation of violence led to a tragic incident on Saturday, where eight Israeli soldiers lost their lives in an explosion in Rafah, marking the deadliest event for the army in the conflict since January. Hamas, on the other hand, claimed responsibility for firing a rocket at an Israeli armoured vehicle during an operation in Rafah's Tal al-Sultan neighbourhood. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the fight against Hamas, emphasizing the goals of the war, including eliminating Hamas' capabilities, securing the return of hostages, and ensuring the safety of Israeli residents. As the conflict in Gaza persists, the need for humanitarian assistance remains urgent, underscoring the complex challenges facing both the Israeli military and civilian populations in the region.
