The Confiep, a guild that brings together 23 business associations, presented to the Executive a detailed document with proposals on 17 key points to improve various aspects of the country, from security to tourism, through health, labor market, and political reform. These proposals, the result of arduous work that included over 200 meetings with experts and authorities, seek to contribute to the development and well-being of Peruvian society. Among these proposals, one of the highlighted points is the need to properly regulate private financing of political parties. Confiep points out that the current restrictions in this area can facilitate the infiltration of illicit money, coming from criminal activities such as informal mining, illegal logging, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, into political campaigns. It is evident that the use of illegally obtained resources in politics represents a serious risk to democracy and transparency in the electoral system. Examples like that of former congresswoman Nancy Obregón, convicted of drug trafficking and financing terrorism, show the disastrous consequences that the presence of dirty money in the political sphere can have. In a context where illegal mining and other illicit activities have proliferated in the country, it is urgent to take measures to prevent the harmful influence of these resources on political decisions. Confiep proposes, among other measures, to restrict the candidacy of individuals with criminal records, regulate and bank all financing to political parties, implement strict controls with independent audits, and establish severe sanctions for those who violate the rules. Transparency and legality in the financing of political parties are fundamental pillars to ensure the integrity of the democratic system and the representativeness of political decisions. Peruvian society must be vigilant against the possibility of illegitimate interests seeking to influence electoral processes and the actions of government officials. It is the responsibility of the authorities, the Executive Branch, the Congress, and society as a whole to ensure the purity of the sources of financing of political parties. Corruption and money laundering are enemies of democracy and justice, and their presence in politics can only lead to a deterioration of institutionalism and a loss of trust by citizens in their representatives. Confiep's proposal is a call to action to strengthen mechanisms of control and transparency in political financing. The implementation of effective measures to prevent the infiltration of illicit money into politics is an essential step to guarantee the legitimacy of institutions and the trust of the population in the democratic system. The future of the country and the quality of the leaders who will represent us in the future depend to a large extent on the cleanliness and legality in the electoral process and in the financing of political parties. It is necessary to act with determination and firmness to prevent dark and criminal interests from trying to influence the direction of the nation. The fight against corruption and money laundering must be a priority to protect democracy and the rule of law in Peru.
