Amidst the escalating violence in the region, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have presented a response considered "positive" to reach a ceasefire in Gaza. This joint statement is the first official response since the President of the United States, Joe Biden, proposed a truce ten days ago. In a statement, both Palestinian factions expressed their willingness to stop the aggression against the Gaza Strip and prioritized the interests of the Palestinian people. The ceasefire proposal from Hamas and Islamic Jihad was also endorsed by the UN Security Council in a new resolution. In the joint statement, the militias emphasized the need for Israel to completely withdraw from Gaza and delivered their official response to the delegations from Egypt and Qatar, countries mediating the conflict along with the United States. Both Qatar and Egypt confirmed receiving the response from the Islamist groups. The situation in the region has been tense, with recent Israeli army attacks in the West Bank resulting in the death of six Palestinians and two injuries. Despite this, Hamas expressed cooperation with the mediators to achieve a ceasefire in the Strip. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been involved in negotiations in the region and emphasized the importance of obtaining Hamas' approval to progress in the peace process. Israel has stated that it will not end the war until it achieves its objectives, which include weakening the military and civilian capabilities of Hamas, ensuring the security of Israel, and freeing Israeli civilians who have been held captive in Gaza since October. The Israeli government has indicated that the proposed ceasefire will allow for these objectives to be achieved, although an official response from Israel is still awaited. After over eight months of conflict and a high number of casualties in Gaza, the international community hopes that a ceasefire agreement will be reached as soon as possible. The aim is to end the violence and allow for the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners. Pressure on both parties to reach an agreement to stop the bloodshed and restore stability in the region is increasing, and it is expected that discussions and negotiations will continue in the coming days.
