An eerie sight of temporary shelters and tents now lines nearly 12 miles of the central Gaza coastline, as a new wave of displacement has hit the region. Satellite imagery reveals a growing expanse of makeshift dwellings as Palestinians, fleeing danger in Rafah, have once again uprooted their lives in search of safety. The exodus from Rafah began in early May when the Israeli military issued evacuation orders for the eastern part of the city in preparation for a ground operation in the south. Subsequently, another wave of displacement occurred following Israeli strikes on a displaced camp and the nearby area of Al-Mawasi, resulting in more casualties and pushing Gazans to seek refuge elsewhere. According to Gazan officials, over a million people, nearly half of the territory's population, have fled Rafah, with many being displaced multiple times. The Israeli military had designated a "humanitarian zone" along the coastal areas from south of Khan Younis to Deir al Balah for evacuating Palestinians to seek shelter. Despite not being named in the evacuation order, residents of western Rafah also began packing up, leading to a visual shift in satellite imagery towards the end of last month. The swift resettlement towards the coastal areas of Khan Younis and Deir al Balah has intensified post the fatal strikes that claimed numerous lives in the displaced camp. Even before the recent events in Rafah, many Palestinians had already sought refuge in central Gaza near Deir al Balah. However, the influx of displaced individuals has now filled the coastline with tents, leaving little space between the shelters and the crashing waves. The scenes of families setting up temporary homes mere meters away from the sea paint a somber picture of the ongoing turmoil and displacement faced by the people of Gaza. As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the need for humanitarian aid and support for those affected by the conflict remains critical.
