A rigged triumph by Maduro will trigger a new wave of migration During an exclusive interview in Lima, 80-year-old Venezuelan political activist Yoris shared her concerns about the schemes that the Chavista regime could employ in the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela. Despite the obstacles and tricks she faced in her attempt to run as a candidate, Yoris is confident that the opposition coalition Democratic Unity Platform (PUD), led by former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, has the necessary citizen support to defeat Maduro. The veteran activist emphasized the importance of citizen participation in the electoral process, showing a photo of a massive gathering in the state of Bolívar as evidence of overwhelming support for the opposition. However, she warned about the possible scenarios of fraud that the Maduro regime could carry out to remain in power, such as spreading false polls and manipulating electoral results. Regarding the transparency of the electoral process, Yoris pointed out that the suspension of the invitation to the European Union electoral observers reflects the lack of democratic guarantees in Venezuela. In light of this situation, the activist highlighted the importance of citizen oversight and the presence of polling station witnesses to prevent possible acts of fraud. Addressing the renewal of the Venezuelan political class, Yoris praised the choice of figures like Edmundo González Urrutia, whose conciliatory profile and diplomatic experience could help refresh the country's political landscape. In this regard, she emphasized the need to abandon the corrupt practices and the cunning ways that have characterized Venezuelan politics in recent decades. Despite internal differences within the opposition, Yoris highlighted the unity achieved in the PUD and the success of the primaries that culminated in the election of María Corina with broad popular support. However, she warned about the challenges the opposition would face in case of victory, especially in a scenario of political transition where the Chavista regime controls all branches of government. Assessing the current state of Venezuela after 25 years of Chavista rule, Yoris described a country impoverished, fractured, and hopeless. In this context, she warned about the devastating consequences that a new Maduro government could have, including a new wave of migration that would severely impact the Latin American region. Ultimately, the activist called on the international community to support a clean, transparent, and credible electoral process in Venezuela, with the aim of avoiding a catastrophic scenario that would generate more suffering for the Venezuelan people and trigger a new migration crisis in the region. The importance of ensuring democracy and stability in Venezuela transcends the country's borders and requires the collaboration and commitment of all international actors involved.
