The mayor of Nuseirat and four other individuals died in an Israeli attack targeting a municipal building, according to reports from the Palestinian news agency Wafa and Al Jazeera correspondents in the area. The tragic event took place shortly after the death of at least 40 Gazans in a refugee camp in Nuseirat, mostly in a school run by the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), where over 500 displaced persons were taking shelter. The Israeli military confirmed the attack and argued that the school housed a complex used by the Islamist group, where "terrorists who participated in the deadly attack against communities in southern Israel on October 7, and who were eliminated" were located. According to the Israeli military spokesperson, between 20 and 30 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists were hiding in the facility, using it as a base of operations to carry out attacks against Israeli forces. Controversy arose when the Israeli military identified nine senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders as among the deceased in the attack on the school. Despite Israel's insistence that the attack focused solely on three classrooms where the militants were hiding, the Gaza government, under Hamas control, claimed that many of the victims were civilians, describing the event as a "horrible massacre." The Hamas government denounced that at least 40 people, including 14 children and 9 women, lost their lives due to the Israeli bombardment, and about 74 were injured. Since the conflict began on October 7, an estimated 36,650 people have died and another 83,300 have been injured in Gaza, with 70% of the victims being women and children, according to the region's Ministry of Health. The Israeli military maintains that precautions were taken to minimize the risk of harming uninvolved civilians, even canceling the attack on two previous occasions for that reason. However, Hamas accuses Israel of carrying out repeated brutal massacres, especially against displaced persons. The UNRWA, an entity under scrutiny by Israel for alleged ties to Hamas, has been the scene of multiple confrontations in the past month, leading to an escalation of violence and a high human cost among the civilian population. Amid the escalation of violence, the international community continues to push for a ceasefire and a diplomatic solution to end the bloodshed in the region. The situation in Gaza remains critical, with thousands of people trapped under the rubble and a growing number of civilian casualties reflecting the high price the population is paying in the midst of this relentless conflict. The hope for a peaceful and lasting resolution seems increasingly elusive in a scenario marked by tragedy and the suffering of a population trapped in the midst of violence and destruction.
