Israel bombed the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, despite the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordering the suspension of its operations in that area. The ICJ had requested Israel to halt its actions in Rafah and any other activity that could result in the partial or total destruction of the Palestinian people in Gaza. However, the bombings continued in Rafah, Khan Yunis, and the city of Gaza. The clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants intensified despite the calls from the ICJ to stop the violence and open the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza in Rafah to allow the entry of humanitarian aid. The situation became even more tense when the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed to have attacked Israeli soldiers in Jabaliya. Despite international pressure and ICJ resolutions, both Israel and Hamas appear to remain firm in their positions. While the Israeli army reported the deaths of militants in different areas of the Gaza Strip, Hamas claimed to have captured an Israeli soldier as a prisoner, a claim denied by Israeli authorities. Amidst this bloody conflict, international talks mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt have resumed in an attempt to reach a ceasefire agreement. The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs reminded Israel of the obligation to comply with the ICJ provisional measures, while new diplomatic efforts were underway to achieve a cessation of hostilities. The trigger for this wave of violence was the attack by Islamist commandos in southern Israel last October, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, mostly civilians, and the kidnapping of 252 individuals. Israel responded with an offensive in Gaza that has left thousands of Palestinians dead and an alarming humanitarian situation in the territory, with the risk of famine and shortages of medical supplies. Meanwhile, thousands of people were protesting in Tel Aviv demanding the release of the hostages, following the announcement by the Israeli army of having recovered the bodies of some of those kidnapped by Hamas. The civilian population in Gaza suffers the consequences of a prolonged conflict that has led to massive displacements, disruptions in basic services, and difficulties in accessing humanitarian aid. Despite international efforts to achieve a ceasefire, violence persists in the region, with bombings and clashes threatening to further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The international community continues to urge all parties involved to cease hostilities and seek a peaceful solution to avoid further suffering for the civilian population trapped in the midst of this devastating conflict.
