Israeli forces have intensified their operations in Rafah, claiming to have destroyed weapons and tunnels in the city over the past 24 hours. The Israeli military announced on Friday that they had targeted "weapons storage facilities, as well as tunnel shafts" in Rafah, a stronghold of the militant group Hamas. In response, Hamas's armed wing retaliated by reportedly targeting Israeli troops with mortars and explosive devices in Rafah. The ongoing clashes between the two sides have escalated tensions in the region, with Israel emphasizing that its actions are part of a limited operation aimed at Hamas battalions. On a separate front, aid that was delivered to Gaza through a U.S.-built temporary pier has faced delays in distribution. The World Food Program revealed that some of the aid has now been distributed after initial setbacks, including looting of trucks by hungry crowds earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen cautioned Israel against severing ties between Palestinian and Israeli banks, warning that such a move could further destabilize the already dire economic situation in the West Bank. Yellen and other economic officials from the Group of 7 nations are set to discuss this issue and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza during their summit in Stresa, Italy. Despite facing diplomatic setbacks internationally, Israel maintains its military campaign in Gaza, drawing a stark contrast between the views of the Israeli public and the global community. The recent events highlight the complex and volatile situation in the region, with conflicting narratives and ongoing tensions shaping the dynamics of the conflict.
