Israel commemorates the 76th anniversary of its creation with more bombings in Gaza RAFAH, Palestinian Territories- Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip have taken a toll in the past 24 hours, leaving over 80 dead, as reported by Hamas on Tuesday. The situation in the city of Rafah is critical, with around 450,000 Palestinians having to flee the targeted areas, while Israel threatens to launch a major offensive in the area. The commemoration of the 76th anniversary of the creation of Israel is overshadowed by the violence in Gaza, where the war between Israel and Hamas has entered its eighth month. The civilian population in the Strip, who have already been displaced on numerous occasions during the conflict, once again faces the difficult task of seeking shelter in a territory besieged by violence. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed horror at the increasing military activity of Israel in Rafah and its surroundings, pointing out that these events are hindering humanitarian access and worsening an already terrible situation. He also criticized Hamas for indiscriminately launching rockets towards Israeli territory, fueling the cycle of violence. The attacks in the Gaza Strip have been reported in various sectors, including Rafah in the southernmost tip, where the majority of the nearly 1.4 million inhabitants are displaced Palestinians. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 82 Palestinians have lost their lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 35,173, mostly civilians. The UN has noted that around 450,000 people have been forcibly displaced since the Israeli army ordered the evacuation of civilians in the eastern part of Rafah in early May. The humanitarian situation worsens with each attack, and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has described the situation as exhausting, with the population facing hunger and constant fear. Combat in the region is escalating, with Hamas firing shells at Israeli soldiers at the Rafah border crossing. Israel has closed this crucial crossing for humanitarian aid, exacerbating the situation for a population already threatened by famine, according to the UN. Meanwhile, Egypt and Israel blame each other for the blockade in the area. Residents of Rafah live in constant fear of bombings and airstrikes, finding no respite or security. Hadil Radwane, a displaced woman, shared her fear for the safety of her children amidst the violence. In other areas of the Strip, Palestinians have also been ordered to leave their homes due to the resumption of fighting. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to destroy Hamas and is considering launching a major operation in Rafah to achieve that goal. However, the United States has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of this strategy, warning about the risk to civilians. Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice will hold hearings on the offensive in Rafah, at the request of South Africa. The escalation of violence in Gaza shows no signs of abating, and negotiations for a ceasefire are hindered by the operation in Rafah. Humanitarian aid has not been able to reach Gaza since early May, described as a "humanitarian catastrophe". Meanwhile, in Israel, an investigation has been launched following the blockade and damage to humanitarian aid trucks destined for Gaza by a group of activists. The situation in Gaza remains critical, with the civilian population trapped amidst violence and uncertainty.
