The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, will have a crucial appearance on Wednesday, May 22 in the Plenary Session of the Congress. In this meeting, various national and international topics will be addressed, including the latest European Council and the complaint against his wife, Begoña Gómez, for her professional activities. This appointment is particularly relevant as it will take place at a strategic moment, just before the start of the electoral campaign for the European elections and at a juncture where the decision to recognize Palestine could be made. The Board of Spokespersons has established that Pedro Sánchez will address four appearances cumulatively during this plenary session. Two of these interventions were requested by the Popular Party, one of them concerning the conflict of interest that, according to the 'populars', affects the president's environment and the PSOE, and the other related to the European tour that Sánchez undertook to seek support for the recognition of the Palestinian State. The registration of the appearance regarding Sánchez's environment took place after a period of reflection by the president, who decided to remain in the Moncloa. The Socialist spokesperson, Patxi López, has stated that the Government has nothing to hide and expects a serious and constructive debate, although he anticipates the possibility that the opposition may seek to gain political advantage from the situation without providing solutions. In addition to the requests from the PP, the Government has requested the appearance for Sánchez to report on the results of the latest European Council and the upcoming agreement with the United Kingdom on Gibraltar, which will include the removal of the border fence and the shared use of the airport on the Rock. At the European summit, the call for a ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors in Palestine was reiterated, as well as the commitment to the two-state solution. Sánchez has expressed his intention to recognize Palestine before the summer, a position shared by other EU leaders. The Irish press suggested that the decision to recognize Palestine could be made on Tuesday, April 21, although the Spanish Government has not confirmed the exact date. If the decision is made before the plenary session on the 22nd, Sánchez will be able to communicate it during his appearance, which will take place at a crucial moment as it precedes the start of the electoral campaign for the European Parliament elections on June 9. This event will be an opportunity for the president to present Spain's position on international issues and to address the complaint involving his wife directly. The focus will be on the explanations and arguments that Sánchez presents to the Congress and how these could influence the national and international political landscape.
