In January, companies in the hydrocarbons sector have paid US$96.2 million in royalties, according to data provided by the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy (SNMPE). This figure represents a decrease of 35.1% compared to the same period last year. It is important to highlight that the amount of royalties paid in January 2023 was also lower than that recorded in January 2022, when companies paid US$182.5 million. The SNMPE has broken down the payments made by companies in the hydrocarbons sector during the first month of the year into different concepts. In this regard, it was reported that US$42.4 million was disbursed for the exploitation of natural gas, US$19.7 million for oil, and US$34.1 million for the production of natural gas liquids. This scenario of a decrease in royalty payments by companies in the hydrocarbons sector raises questions about the reasons behind this decline. While it is true that the economy has experienced a growth of 1.37% in January, it is essential to analyze in detail the factors that have contributed to this positive result. In a context marked by the volatility of international hydrocarbon prices and the challenges facing the sector in terms of environmental sustainability, it is crucial to closely examine the situation to understand the implications in the short and long term. Given this situation, it is necessary for both authorities and companies in the sector to work together to promote strategies that foster sustainable development and the generation of benefits for the country as a whole. Transparency in the management of natural resources and the pursuit of a balance between extractive activity and environmental protection are fundamental pillars to ensure solid and sustainable long-term economic growth.
