North Korea's Kim Jong Un continues to assert military prowess with live-fire drills showcasing "super-large" rocket launchers, marking a departure from the nation's recent inter-Korean policies. The drills come in the wake of South Korea and Japan reporting Pyongyang's launch of short-range ballistic missiles, the first test in approximately two months. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) detailed the exercises as a demonstration of the "real war capabilities" of 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, equipped with new enhancements. These drills included simulating an aerial explosion of a shell at a set altitude above the target, showcasing North Korea's artillery marksmanship and combat readiness. Kim Jong Un, known for his ambition to modernize North Korea's military, emphasized the rocket launchers as essential assets for war readiness. He underscored their role as the "core central striking means" in potential conflict scenarios, aiming to deter adversaries and enhance North Korea's defensive capabilities. According to South Korea's military, the launch involved multiple short-range ballistic missiles, identified as the KN-25. This missile type is categorized as a short-range ballistic missile, a violation of sanctions prohibiting North Korea from conducting ballistic missile tests due to its nuclear weapons program. The recent tests and displays of military might by North Korea are seen as a strategic move by experts like Leif-Eric Easley to signal strength domestically, influence South Korea's security cooperation decisions, and send a warning message to the United States regarding pressure on Pyongyang. Kim Jong Un's involvement in overseeing these drills, clad in a striking black leather jacket, further emphasizes his commitment to military advancements and readiness. Images released through state media portrayed Kim exuding confidence and celebration, symbolized by his fist-pumping gesture in response to the successful tests. In recent years, North Korea has shifted away from inter-Korean cooperation, terminating military agreements with South Korea and intensifying weapons testing activities. These actions, coupled with Kim's bellicose rhetoric about war preparations, have heightened tensions in the region. Responding to the threat posed by North Korea's missile capabilities, South Korea's Defence Minister Shin Won-sik warned of the potential consequences of a significant missile attack, citing it as a trigger for war and prompting decisive retaliatory measures. North Korea's ballistic missile tests, including the recent launch with a manoeuvrable hypersonic warhead, underscore the persistent challenges posed by the regime's military ambitions, despite international sanctions and diplomatic efforts to curb its weapons program.
