The fugitive Vladimir Cerrón, leader of Peru Libre, has sparked controversy by requesting from hiding that Congress reinstate parliamentary immunity "in all its aspects." This request comes amid a tumultuous political scenario in which fourteen congressmen have been included in an investigation related to the suspended Attorney General, Patricia Benavides. Cerrón, who has been on the run from justice since October 2023 after being sentenced to three and a half years of effective imprisonment, expressed his opinion through social media, criticizing the elimination of parliamentary immunity and describing the current situation as a "bilateral blackmail" between Congress and the Prosecutor's Office that only contributes to the instability of the country. On the other hand, the President of Congress, Alejandro Soto Reyes, spoke out against the threat of raids on the offices of the investigated congressmen, ensuring that he will not allow such a measure and guaranteeing the security of the Parliament's facilities. The situation worsens with the filing of a constitutional complaint by five of the investigated congressmen against Supreme Prosecutor Delia Espinoza, who is in charge of the investigation related to Patricia Benavides. This complaint was dismissed by the Attorney General Juan Carlos Villena Campana, the titular Supreme Prosecutor Pablo Sánchez Velarde, and the titular Supreme Prosecutor Delia Espinoza Valenzuela, who argued that it lacks foundation. Villena Campana explained that he stepped aside from the investigation because he was involved in the main events to be investigated, related to the search for votes from congressmen to disqualify Zoraida Ávalos, which is why Espinoza was appointed to take over the case. Amidst these tensions and mutual accusations, Peru Libre has seen its caucus reduced by 70%, leaving only with 11 members and plunging into an internal crisis that threatens to further weaken its political position in Congress. Uncertainty and political tension persist in Peru, as the public watches closely the outcome of these events that could have significant repercussions on the country's political landscape.
