The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is gearing up for its 11th regular season, and the anticipation is palpable as the league continues its upward trajectory. With expansion interest soaring, new media partnerships enhancing accessibility, and record player transfer fees being paid, the NWSL is setting new standards as a collective entity. However, not all teams are on the same page when it comes to ambition and progress. Inspired by the late Grant Wahl's "Ambition Rankings" for MLS teams, a similar assessment has been conducted to gauge the NWSL clubs based on key categories both on and off the field. Factors such as investment in players, facilities, innovation, long-term vision, staffing, and local market relevance were taken into consideration to rank the 14 NWSL teams in a semi-scientific manner. At the top of the ambition rankings is the Kansas City Current, who have set themselves apart with the opening of CPKC Stadium, the first stadium built specifically for an NWSL team. Kansas City's commitment to superior facilities, innovative branding efforts, and investments in top-tier coaching and international players have pushed them to the forefront of ambition within the league. Following closely behind is Angel City, who have made significant strides in branding, community engagement, and operational standards under a celebrity-backed ownership group. Despite some facility challenges, Angel City's purpose-driven approach and commitment to excellence have propelled them to the upper echelons of ambition in the NWSL. The San Diego Wave, buoyed by their success on the field and strategic signings, have emerged as a powerhouse in the league. With plans for a dedicated training facility and a focus on local relevance, the Wave are setting the bar high for other NWSL teams. On the flip side, teams like the Chicago Red Stars and Houston Dash are facing challenges in overcoming historical underinvestment and instability. However, with new ownership and financial commitments, there is hope for a turnaround and renewed ambition within these organizations. The NWSL landscape is evolving rapidly, with teams vying to raise the standard of women's soccer in the U.S. Each club's level of ambition and commitment to growth will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the league. As the 2024 season kicks off, all eyes will be on these teams as they strive to make their mark and push the boundaries of success in the NWSL.
