In the midst of a year of economic recession, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) is focused on the reactivation of projects as a fundamental strategy to revitalize the national economy. This was highlighted by the head of the ministry, Rómulo Mucho, in the latest press conference following the Council of Ministers. Mucho emphasized the urgency of maximizing the available resources to generate income that meets the country's needs. In this sense, he emphasized the importance of a diversified list of projects, among which are initiatives such as Conga and Tía María, which are close to being promoted despite the criticisms of peasant communities. The minister mentioned that in addition to Conga and Tía María, there are several more projects that are about to be promoted during this year, reflecting the diversification in the project portfolio as an objective to boost economic growth and ensure greater financial stability. Regarding investments in the mining sector, Mucho expressed the government's determination to maintain the level of mining investment this year, without decreases compared to the previous year. Although specific details about the investments have not been announced, there are prospects for investment in the year 2024. During 2023, mining investment reached US$ 4.715 billion, exceeding the proposed target but registering a 9.9% decrease compared to 2022. The minister acknowledged the importance of projects like Tía María for the Arequipa region and for the country as a whole, despite the opposition of some communities in the Tambo Valley. Regarding the questioning of four ministers by the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Rómulo Mucho stated that he understands this process as part of the democratic exercise and committed to providing clear answers to all questions that may arise about his management and the suitability of the position they hold.
