The Super League suffers a setback in registration with the EU a day before the oral hearing against FIFA and UEFA This Thursday, in Madrid, the oral hearing of the Super League against FIFA and UEFA is scheduled, accusing them of abuse of dominant position. However, the project has suffered a setback before the hearing, as the EU registration authority ruled in favor of the Professional Clubs Association of Denmark regarding the ownership of the name. The company European Super League tried to register its trademark in the EU, but it was determined that it would infringe on the rights of the Superliga, jointly owned by Danish clubs. This ruling, subject to appeal, would force the promoters of the European project to look for another name for the competition. The president of the top Danish football league, Claus Thomsen, expressed his satisfaction with the decision, indicating that the brand 'The Super League' would violate the value invested by Danish clubs in the 3F Superliga. Thomsen reiterated his opposition to the European Super League, advocating for openness and qualification for international tournaments through national leagues. In Madrid, the oral hearing of the Super League case will take place in the Mercantile Court No. 17 starting at 10:00 a.m. Real Madrid and its partners reported possible abuses of dominant position by UEFA and FIFA. This case was referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union, which last December ruled the UEFA and FIFA veto on the organization of the Super League illegal, concluding that the rules of these associations do not guarantee transparency, proportionality, and objectivity. The European High Court pointed out that FIFA and UEFA are abusing their dominant position by having exclusive control over the commercial exploitation of the competitions they organize. This situation could harm European clubs, companies in the media market, and consumers by preventing them from benefiting from innovative new competitions.
