The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has expressed his interest in establishing "common criteria for criminal policy" with the new Attorney General of the country, Luz Adriana Camargo. After an intense day of voting at the Court, Camargo was elected with 18 votes, two more than necessary for the majority. With extensive experience in criminal justice and international commissions, Camargo has worked in both the Prosecutor's Office and the Supreme Court of Justice. Her career includes serving as a deputy prosecutor before the Supreme Court and as an assistant magistrate of the Criminal Cassation Chamber, where she collaborated with the current Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez, on high-profile investigations related to corruption and links with paramilitaries. Furthermore, the new Attorney General has been part of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), where she led investigations into corruption and crimes involving congressmen in that country. Camargo's election represents a change in the Colombian Prosecutor's Office, as she will replace Francisco Barbosa, whose term ended over a month ago. Barbosa, who was elected in 2020 from a shortlist proposed by former President Iván Duque, will now step down to usher in a new phase in the fight against corruption and crime in Colombia. President Petro has expressed his confidence in the work that the new Attorney General will carry out and has highlighted her commitment to transparency and integrity in the administration of justice. It is expected that dialogue between the National Government and the Prosecutor's Office under Camargo's leadership will establish the necessary criteria to strengthen criminal policy in the country and effectively combat criminality. Amidst challenges and expectations, Luz Adriana Camargo takes on a crucial role in the administration of justice in Colombia, with the responsibility of guiding and leading key investigations for the country in the coming years.
