The ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) has proposed President Nicolás Maduro as a presidential candidate for the elections scheduled to take place on July 28. This decision came after three days of assemblies in different states of the country, where party members expressed their support for Maduro. The president thanked his supporters and his official proclamation as a candidate is expected to take place on March 15. Maduro has been campaigning for weeks, increasing his public appearances and announcing "new generation" social programs and the creation of new public works. On the other hand, the opposition in Venezuela is searching for a candidate after the political disqualification of María Corina Machado, who had won by a landslide in the primaries of the main coalition Democratic Unity Platform last October. Although Machado insists on running, her candidacy is currently discarded. The eligibility of candidates has been a controversial issue in the dialogues between the government and the opposition, mediated by Norway. Last October, both parties signed an agreement in Barbados to organize the elections with the presence of international observers, but the Supreme Court, accused of acting under the government's influence, confirmed Machado's ineligibility on January 26. The opposition demands that their candidate be eligible, while the election date in July respects the agreement to hold them in the second semester of 2024, although it poses challenges regarding the formation of international observation missions. The National Electoral Council has sent invitations to the European Union, the UN, and the Carter Center to observe the electoral process, and the official nomination of candidates before the CNE will take place between March 21 and 25.
