The United Nations human rights chief, Volker Turk, has issued a stark warning about the escalating conflict in Gaza, describing it as a "powder keg" that could trigger a wider war with far-reaching consequences for the Middle East and beyond. Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Turk expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, now in its 150th day, and the dangerous spillover effects it has already had on neighboring countries. He emphasized that any small spark could lead to a much broader conflagration, with implications for countries across the region and beyond. Turk specifically highlighted the military escalation between Israel and Hezbollah and other armed groups in Lebanon as "extremely worrying." The cross-border exchanges of fire between the Israeli army and Hezbollah since October 8 have resulted in casualties, displacement of tens of thousands of people, and destruction of vital infrastructure. Recent attacks, including Israel's strikes on towns in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah's assault on a community in northern Israel, have heightened tensions and raised fears of further escalation. The situation is complex, with Yemen's Houthi rebels also targeting ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in protest against the war in Gaza, disrupting international trade and impacting developing countries. The reprisal strikes by the United States and the United Kingdom on Houthi targets in Yemen highlight the growing regional implications of the conflict. Turk warned that the conflict could extend to Yemen itself, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country already reeling from a decade of war. The high commissioner stressed the urgent need to prevent a wider escalation of the conflict and called for international efforts to de-escalate tensions and protect the lives and rights of all those affected by the violence. As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, the international community faces a critical challenge in averting a broader conflict that could have devastating consequences for the entire region.
